Oxford Economics and Management Student Success Story

It’s important to celebrate the achievements of our students after months of hard work and dedication.

Today we are celebrating Jacob’s story of achieving an Oxford Economics and Management offer. Jacob kindly met with Rob, our Content Team Leader, to share his experience of our Oxbridge Economics Programme:

Let’s start the journey from when we first spoke to Jacob about his Oxford plans during one of our free consultations

“My confidence improved massively since using the support of UniAdmissions as I knew I had people I could rely on to help, and that there was guidance and expertise at all times. I didn’t receive the necessary help from school and so having UniAdmissions’ specialised support was vital in increasing my understanding of the process, and therefore increasing my confidence.” – Jacob

1. Initial Contact And Meeting Your Tutor

I know it was a while ago Jacob, but why did you first contact UniAdmissions?

The main reason was that the Oxford application process was something completely new to me and my family. I knew I wanted to apply to Oxford but I couldn’t decide on PPE, History and Economics or Economics and Management. I felt a lot of pressure to choose PPE but after speaking to Will, one of UniAdmissions’ Admissions Consultants, he advised me to choose the course I really wanted to study. This was helpful advice and I am pleased I made this decision.

How was your initial session with your tutor?

It was an informational session. My tutor (Simon) asked me which areas I thought I needed more support with, and I let him know so that he could tailor the sessions towards this (Interview practice as I found the TSA more straightforward). Having someone with lots of experience guide me at the start was very important in raising my confidence, as I really wasn’t familiar with the process. Then, having weekly sessions meant I was always on top of my Oxford application, even at less busy times.

Do you feel you were well matched with Simon, your tutor?

Yes, really well, Simon is an E&M student which meant I was able to discuss areas of economics that I was interested in, such as Behavioural Economics. Simon gave me lots of insightful advice around writing my Personal Statement and he told me not to add Behavioural Economics as it is highly overused and so it would just weaken my application.

As I said to you earlier Rob, I wanted more support with the Interviews, so Simon started Interview preparation with me very early on into my application. We made a habit of discussing a new topic each week in an Interview style. This meant that when I went for my Interview at Oxford, I found it far more comfortable, even though the Admissions Tutor tried catching me out with simple quick-fire questions which would have really thrown me off otherwise.

2. Oxford Economics Application Support

How did you benefit from our Personal Statement support?

What aspect of our Admissions Test support did you find the most useful?

How did you benefit from our Personal Statement support?

I found the support with my Personal Statement from my tutor was very helpful. It’s not something I was familiar with and I received little support from my school, so the sessions were much needed. The courses were also helpful. Being able to do a number of drafts and get them marked by UniAdmissions meant my Personal Statement was a lot stronger.

What aspect of our Admissions Test support did you find the most useful?

I really enjoyed the sessions with my TSA tutor. The paper is of a different style to anything I’ve done before but was one I found quite interesting, and so doing the courses and one-to-one sessions where I could see different ways of finding the answers, and little tricks, was definitely my favourite part.

How did you find our Interview support?

This was definitely the most helpful aspect for me. Having that one-on-one approach to preparing combined with the mock interviews was invaluable. I had done a few Interviews with school and family friends but doing Interviews with people I didn’t know and under some pressure was extremely useful in preparing and being ready for the real thing.

3. Our Impact And Looking Towards The Future

How has your confidence with your application improved since working with us?

My confidence improved massively since using the support of UniAdmissions as I knew I had people I could rely on to help, and that there was guidance and expertise at all times. I didn’t receive the necessary help from school and so having UniAdmissions’ specialised support was vital in increasing my understanding of the process and therefore increasing my confidence.

What can you take away from our support to help you in further education?

The main thing I’ve learnt is that even if something is a while away, doing a little bit every so often to prepare is very useful and will improve my final performance a great deal. Also, seeing my tutor’s workload has shown me that it’s possible to balance something like an Oxford degree with other outside activities that can help others.

What impact did we make on your application process?

The greatest impact was that of increasing my motivation. Due to the support I had, I truly felt I had a chance at getting an offer which increased my motivation to prepare and apply myself. Had I not had this increased motivation gained from my programme, I would not have received an offer. I definitely would not have done as much wider reading, followed the news or completed as many practice papers without the weekly sessions as they got me into the Oxford mindset. I also don’t feel complacent at all about my offer and will try my best to do well in my exams.

Thanks Jacob, one last question, would you recommend our Oxbridge Programmes to your friends and why?

Most definitely, I couldn’t recommend it enough. Having UniAdmissions by your side does the most important things in the application- developing your understanding of the process, improving confidence and increasing motivation. It is also clear they helped me increase my chances of receiving an offer massively and so it is definitely worth the investment.
