Today we are sharing Valentina’s story of receiving an Economics offer from Cambridge. Valentina kindly sat down with Rob, our Content Team Leader, to talk through her application journey using our Oxbridge Economics Programme:

Valentina, let’s go back a few months. Why did you contact UniAdmissions?
I contacted UniAdmissions because I was attracted by the success rate. I specifically wanted help with the Admissions Test preparations and Interview preparations because I knew these were areas that my school wouldn’t prepare me as well for.
How was your initial session with your tutor?
The initial session with my tutor was spent organising how we wished to go forward with my support; predominantly what kind of support I wanted, when I would be available to hold sessions and how much homework I would be able to complete. My tutor (Alex), was really knowledgeable! He also outlined the support I would receive from UniAdmissions and showed me where to find all the resources.
Did you have lots of questions and do you feel you were well matched with your tutor?
Yes, I did, I went in a bit blind and felt unsure about the Cambridge Economics application process, but Alex clearly explained the process to me and made sure I was confident about dates and how we were going to work towards my Economics offer. And yes, I think I was matched with my tutor well. We got on and he was very supportive and motivating.

How did you find our Personal Statement support?
I found the support for writing my Personal Statement very useful. The advice given by my tutor was invaluable to making my Personal Statement “Oxbridge quality” and gave me far more support than was given by school.
What aspect of our Admissions Test support did you find the most useful?
The most useful part of Admissions Test support was the test practise tool on the Student Portal on the website. The easy access to the Admissions Test standard questions was greatly useful in allowing me to get up to the speeds required to perform well in the Admissions Test.
I hopped on and did 10 questions each day under time pressure and I definitely saw my score go up. It was really easy to use and just convenient really.
How did you benefit from our Interview support?
The most useful aspect of Interview support was having mock Interviews. Going through the process of being under pressure and still having to think concisely was invaluable for my performance in the Interview. Without the help, I feel I would have been totally overwhelmed during the Interview, particularly as I did not know what to expect before.

I understood how competitive it was to get a place in Cambridge, so I never let myself expect to get an offer at the end of the process, but I can confidently say that I would have struggled in preparing for the process without UniAdmissions’ support.
What impact did we make on your application process?
Definitely a positive one. The support provided by UniAdmissions made my application a lot stronger. For example, I didn’t realise the quality of Personal Statement necessary to make it “Oxbridge quality” until I sat down with my tutor.
What can you take away from our support to help you in further education?
Some of the wider knowledge in my subject gained from the support provided by UniAdmissions will help me at Cambridge. For example, I am really interested in development economics and my tutor shared their notes from Cambridge about the subject. This was very inspiring and it actually became a good talking point for me during the Interview.
Aside from the wider knowledge, what about study skills?
Oh sure, some of the independent study skills I gained from the process will definitely help me in later life. I was one of very few applying for Cambridge Economics in my year, so I was quite on my own at school with preparation. However, this meant that I developed pretty strong independent study skills, especially motivation, as I found I could keep motivating myself on the run-up to my Admissions Test and Interview.
Final question, then I’ll let you get back to your A-level mocks revision. Would you recommend our Oxbridge Programmes to your friends and why?
I would because I believe that having someone who knows and understands the process is crucial to thriving in the process, therefore, I certainly would.
