Gaining admission to the University of Oxford is an exceptionally competitive achievement. Every year, over 20,000 students apply, yet only around 16% receive an offer, based on the average offer rate from 2023 to 2025.
Interviews are the last stage of the application process. All interview invitations are sent in mid to late November, after admissions tests have been completed and all applications received. The interviews then take place during the first three weeks of December.
The interview stage, often seen as the most decisive part of Oxford admissions, assesses how applicants think, reason, and respond to new ideas – much like Oxford’s renowned tutorial teaching style. Performing well in these interviews gives admissions tutors confidence that a candidate can thrive in the University’s rigorous academic environment. For those unfamiliar with the tutorial system, it centres on one-to-one or small-group discussions where students engage with tutors and peers, developing their ability to express ideas clearly and think critically under pressure.
When looking at general admissions data, we usually see the total number of applicants, offers, and acceptances. However, information about how many applicants are invited to interview is much harder to find. In this guide, we explore Oxford’s interview rates to better understand the numbers of applicants who reach and succeed in the interview stage. We analyse collective data from 2023 to 2025 provide a clearer picture of what applicants can expect.
It’s also worth noting that while this data provides useful insights into Oxford’s interview success rates, it has some limitations. Factors such as gap-year deferrals, reapplications, and small applicant numbers for certain courses can slightly affect the percentages, but overall the data still gives a helpful picture of what applicants can expect.

Oxford Interview Rates – Overall
What Percentage of Oxford Applicants Were Interviewed?
For 2023-2025, the University of Oxford received 69,601 applications, but only 39,294 of those were interviewed. That gives us an overall interview rate of approximately 56.5% for all courses at the University.
Interview rate= Applicants Interviewed/Total Applicants
As you can see, less than half of all applicants make it to the interview stage. That’s reasonable given that the interview is the final stage of the process — applicants who perform less strongly in earlier stages, such as their personal statement or admissions test, are typically filtered out before this point.
What Percentage of Interviewed Oxford Applicants Got An Offer?
Of the 39,294 interviewed applicants, 11,405 received an offer – that gives us an offer rate of roughly 29.0%.
Offer Rate for Interviewed = Offers/Applicants Interviewed
This highlights how decisive the interview stage is: fewer than four in ten applicants who reach the interview stage ultimately receive an offer.
What Percentage of Interviewed Oxford Applicants Accepted Their Offers?
Finally, 9,766 offers were accepted, giving an acceptance rate for interviewed applicants of 24.9%.

Key Takeaways
As you would expect, the five most popular Oxford courses all have interview rates well below the University average of 56.5%, ranging from just 18% for Economics and Management to 38% for PPE. Put simply, these subjects attract far more exceptional applicants than there are places available. Economics and Management and Physics have the lowest interview rates in this list (18% and 31% respectively), showing just how much of the competition happens before interview. Strong admissions test scores, excellent grades, and a compelling academic profile are essential, because tutors have to make difficult decisions long before candidates ever speak to them.
One evident pattern is that offer rates among interviewed candidates are surprisingly similar, generally sitting between 33% and 46%. In other words, getting an interview is a much bigger achievement than many students realise. By the time you reach that stage, Oxford tutors already know you have the academic credentials. The interview is less about catching you out and more about understanding how you think: how you approach unfamiliar problems, respond to new ideas, and engage in the sort of academic discussion that defines Oxford teaching.
Economics and Management stands out for another reason. Not only is it the hardest of these five courses to secure an interview for, but interviewed candidates also have the lowest acceptance rate overall (29%). For E&M applicants, that means competition remains fierce right to the end. Securing an interview is a major milestone, but it isn’t the finish line. Every part of the application matters, and strong interview preparation can make a real difference when you’re competing with such a highly accomplished pool.
Interestingly, Mathematics applicants who reach interview are the most likely to receive an offer, with around 40% ultimately gaining a place. This reflects something admissions tutors often emphasise: an interview invitation isn’t just a reward for good grades, it’s a sign that Oxford sees genuine potential. Across all subjects, once you’ve made it to interview, you should stop worrying about whether you’re “good enough”. Oxford has already decided that you are. The focus then shifts to showing tutors how you think, not proving how much you know.

Oxford Interview Rates - Key Takeaways
Now let’s see if we can derive any useful insights from the data.
Hardest & Easiest Oxford Courses to Land an Interview
By looking at the interview rate, we can get an idea of how likely it is for students to land interviews for different undergraduate courses at the University of Oxford, or whether most of them are filtered out during previous stages of the application process – for example, during the admissions tests.
Hardest Oxford Courses To Land An Interview
Firstly, let’s look at the courses with lowest interview rates:
Lowest Interview Rates at Oxford 2023-2025
| Course | Applicants | % of Applicants Interviewed |
|---|---|---|
| Economics & Management | 4,602 | 18% |
| Computer Science | 2,457 | 21% |
| Fine Art | 775 | 21% |
| Biomedical Sciences | 1,592 | 24% |
| Physics and Philosophy | 467 | 24% |
- Economics and Management (E&M) is the hardest course to land an interview for, reflecting extremely high pre-interview selection standards based on TARA performance and academic profile.
- Computer Science follows closely at 21%, suggesting a similar emphasis on rigorous pre-interview assessments (TMUA scores and academic background).
- Fine Art has 21%, though for Fine Art this may be influenced by portfolio screening.
- Biomedical Science and Physics and Philosophy (both at 24%) rounds out the top 5, another course where early filtering (e.g., ESAT, predicted grades) plays a big role.
Easiest Oxford Courses To Land An Interview
Highest Interview Rates at Oxford 2023-2025
| Course | Applicants | % of Applicants Interviewed |
|---|---|---|
| Classics | 938 | 95% |
| Modern Languages and Linguistics | 290 | 95% |
| Classics and Modern Languages | 62 | 95% |
| Modern Languages | 962 | 94% |
| European and Middle Eastern Languages | 99 | 93% |
These subjects – particularly Classics and Modern Languages – show very high interview rates (above 90%), meaning nearly every applicant is interviewed. This reflects Oxford’s holistic admissions approach for these courses, where academic potential and interview performance are heavily weighted and written assessments or portfolios play a supportive (not eliminative) role.
Conclusion
We’ve covered a lot in this guide, but by analysing the data presented, you now have a more comprehensive picture of Oxford’s acceptance rates. This insight can help you make more informed decisions as you plan and prepare for your own application.
While admissions data can be extremely useful when preparing for Oxbridge, it’s equally important not to lose sight of your true interests and academic passions. It’s always better to put your effort into a course that genuinely excites you rather than choosing one purely for its promising admission statistics.
