The United Kingdom Clinical Aptitude Test (UKCAT) is a 2-hour computer-based exam, which is taken by applicants to certain medical and dental schools in the UK.

The test was first introduced in 2006 and is used to help medical schools differentiate between the high number of applications they receive. This means it is important to score well and taking the test at the right time can be a big part of that!

All 5 sections of the UKCAT are multiple choice format.

They cover the topics; Verbal reasoning, decision making, quantitative reasoning, abstract reasoning and situational judgement. Different applicants will find different sections of this test challenging, with the abstract reasoning section being particularly unfamiliar to most students.

The use and interpretation of the ukcat varies from university to university , but the average test results are scaled between 300 and 900. An average score is 600, with below 500 being poor and over 700 being exceptional.

The key dates you need to know for the UKCAT are:

• 1st May 2018 – Registration and booking opens
• 2nd July 2018 – Testing begins
• 18th September 5pm – Registration and online booking closes
• 1st October 2018 – Midday – Final booking deadline
• 2nd October 2018 – Last testing date
• 15th October 2018 – UCAS application deadline
• Early November 2018 – Results delivered to universities

Applicants can only take the ukcat once per application round and it can be a big decider in admissions tutors’ final decision. As a result, it is really important to prepare well for the test. Practicing the less familiar sections can greatly improve an applicant’s final score.

Here at UniAdmissions, we are experts in preparing applicants to assemble the best possible medical school application and this includes a stellar performance in the UKCAT.

All of our tutors are Oxford and Cambridge undergraduates and graduates, who scored in the top 10% nationally when they took the ukcat. Furthermore, we offer services to help students perfect their personal statement, fine-tune their application and prepare extensively for those all-important interviews.

This includes working with tutors who are specialist in each aspect of the process, including 4 x 1-hour mock interviews with senior tutors who deliver realistic interviews, followed up by full written and verbal feedback. We supplement this tailored, expert 1-on-1 tuition with a series of resources, such as our ‘Ultimate ukcat Guide’ with 1250 practice questions, providing you with content to work through at your own pace alongside your tutorials.
