Why do Universities use BMAT cut off scores?

The BMAT (Biomedical Aptitude Test) is an admissions test used by several medical schools across the UK. These medical schools include Imperial College, Oxford, Cambridge, UCL, Brighton & Sussex, Keele, Lancaster, and Leeds.

Each medical school score the BMAT results in different ways and for Brighton and Sussex BMAT cut off 2019 they have strict scoring methods that should be noted. These cut-offs are the marks that applicants who are offered to interview must achieve on top of other criteria in their admissions.

What is the Brighton and Sussex BMAT cut off?

The Brighton and Sussex medical school website comments about the Brighton and Sussex BMAT cut off 2019, saying:

“The BMAT is scored out of the total 28 for all three sections. This is broken down as 9 marks for Section 1 and Section 2, and 5 marks for both the elements in Section 3. BSMS then rank all applicants according to their total score out of 28 and work down the rankings to fill interview places. IFor 2020 entry, applicants who scored 14.7 or higher were invited to interview. Although it’s important to note that the cut off score will vary each year.”

Therefore, the Brighton and Sussex BMAT cut off 2019 was a strict cut off of 14.7 based on a total score of the three BMAT sections added together. This differs from other medical schools which would rely on cut off scores for each individual section.

Note that Brighton and Sussex are committed to widening access for applicants. As such, they take into account contextual factors such as living in a neighbourhood that has low participation in higher education which, as a result, makes allowances for a lower BMAT cut-off.

In addition, non-EU applicants are not required to sit the BMAT.

How does the Brighton and Sussex BMAT cut off compare to other years?

The Brighton and Sussex BMAT cut off compares to previous years’ cut-offs as follows:

  • 2018 BMAT Cut Off: Total score of 16.1
  • 2017 BMAT Cut Off: Total score of 16.4
  • 2016 BMAT Cut Off: Total score of 17.3
  • 2015 BMAT Cut Off: Total score of 15.1

Therefore, Brighton and Sussex BMAT cut off falls within the average of 15 to 17.5 out of a total maximum possible BMAT score of 28.

How does the Brighton and Sussex BMAT cut off compare to national averages?

The national average BMAT cut off across all the medical schools in the UK who require applicants to take the test is within the region of 5.0 per section. The better applicants will most likely receive a slightly higher score of 6.0 although it is on the rare, exceptional applicants that will achieve a BMAT score of 7.0 or higher.

When we look at dividing the scores between sections for Brighton and Sussex BMAT cut offs, we can see a similar expectation. For example, students will be expected to score slightly over half marks for all three sections (6.0 for both section one and section two and, let’s say, 4.0 for section 3 for a total of 16.0) to achieve or surpass BMAT cut off scores.
